LOOKING AHEAD THIS WEEK-OCT. 27TH-NOV. 1ST

Op Gratitude Halloween candy drive

Be sure to set aside some of your savory Halloween candy for our troops and support Operation Gratitude via our Christian Service project for November sponsored by our First Grade Little Buddies!

As we all get into the Halloween spirit this week, it is important to remember the Christian significance behind this holiday.  On Friday, I strongly encourage all of you to attend Mass for what our Church calls All Saints Day and considers to be a holy day of obligation.  Following is an excerpt from http://www.catholicism/about:

“Halloween” is a name that means nothing by itself. It is a contraction of “All Hallows Eve,” and it designates the vigil of All Hallows Day, more commonly known today as All Saints Day. (“Hallow,” as a noun, is an old English word for saint. As a verb, it means to make something holy or to honor it as holy.) All Saints Day, November 1, is a Holy Day of Obligation, and both the feast and the vigil have been celebrated since the early eighth century, when they were instituted by Pope Gregory III in Rome.

Here is a Halloween blessing that you can share with your family and friends as you light your jack ‘o lantern.  😉  Please remember to stay safe and make smart choices while celebrating this fun holiday that we all look forward to each autumn:

God who created pumpkins and people, bless our beautiful Halloween light.  This light reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world.  Jesus shines through the darkness and turns the night into day, sadness into joy, hate into love, and tears into smiles.  Bless the jack ‘o lanterns that we have in our homes.  Let them be a reminder that we are your lights that light up the smiles and hearts of our friends and family.  Bless the happy pumpkins we have carved for our candles.  We pray that everyone who sees them might never be afraid of the darkness because your wonderful light is with us.  Amen.

Monday:  regular schedule and regular uniform.  Student Council meeting after school

Tuesday:  regular schedule and full dress uniform.  Bring your PE clothes to change into for fitness.

Wednesday: regular day and regular schedule

Thursday:  costume parade after morning assembly.  (Please make sure your costumes are in good taste and do not include gore or anything that could be found disturbing by our younger students and our “little First Grade Buddies.”) Special student-guided Halloween art lesson and then buddy activity at 1:45… “it’s gonna be great!” 🙂

Friday:  no school–All Souls Day Holy Day of Obligation

September 30 – October 4, 2013

Respect Life Week (RLW) is a joint project of the Department of Catholic Schools and the Office of Life, Justice and Peace to immerse Catholic middle and high school students in the understanding of the dignity of every human person and our call to proclaim the Gospel of Life in our community.

RLW 2013 looks at the most critical human rights issues of our time through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching and the infinite love of Christ for each and every person.  Middle and high school students are challenged to wrestle with these issues in every academic area and through hands-on service.  We need the innovation and creativity of our future leaders as together we build a culture of life, justice and peace in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles!
